Lauren Drew Martin, DVM

Veterinary Advisor

OHSU NHP Center (ONPRC)

Dr. Lauren Drew Martin, D.V.M., DACLAM, is the Associate Director of the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) at the Oregon National Primate Research Center (OHSU). She received her veterinary degree from Oregon State University in 2007, followed by a Primate Medicine & Surgery internship at ONPRC. After joining the Center as a surgical veterinarian in 2008, she helped oversee day-to-day operations of the DCM Surgical Services Unit, supporting a broad range of NHP surgical and translational research procedures. In 2012, Dr. Martin expanded her responsibilities by assuming leadership of the DCM Small Laboratory Animal Unit, enabling investigators to conduct translational studies that progress from rodent models to nonhuman primates. She achieved board certification through the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) in 2014. In 2020, she became the DCM Operations Unit Head, managing ONPRC’s largest Animal Resources & Research Support (ARRS) Unit, which includes more than 70 animal care technicians and supervisory staff responsible for the daily husbandry of the Center’s extensive NHP colony. Since 2016, Dr. Martin has simultaneously served as Director of the Time-Mated Breeding (TMB) Program, coordinating the provision of highly specialized, precisely timed pregnancies to support research in reproduction, development, infectious disease, and maternal–fetal health. That same year, she was appointed Assistant Chief of DCM, collaborating closely with division leadership to guide the West Campus animal care program. Dr. Martin’s research and clinical interests encompass fetal and neonatal anesthesia and their neurodevelopmental effects, neonatal intensive care in infectious disease models, and the development of minimally invasive permanent contraception techniques. With more than 16 years of experience in nonhuman primate management and surgery—including advanced laparoscopy and assisted reproductive technologies—she is recognized for her expertise in minimally invasive surgical approaches and translational model development. Appointed Associate Director of DCM in 2022, Dr. Martin now oversees all aspects of ONPRC’s animal care program, supporting approximately 5,000 nonhuman primates and leading more than 140 animal care personnel across the Center. She remains professionally active and holds or has held leadership roles within ACLAM, the Association of Primate Veterinarians, the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, and the Academy of Surgical Research. She also serves as an ad hoc specialist for AAALAC International.
